Formed by the congregational church of St Domingo in 1878, Everton initially played their football at Stanley Park before Houlding leased for the club a spot of land just opposite his home on Anfield Road, which he then bought outright in 1885. So far, so amicable and Everton were crowned First Division champions in 1891.

The original St Edward's College had been established as a boarding school in 1848 in a large mansion called St Domingo House; named after the Isle of San Domingo, where one George Campbell, a privateer and subsequently Mayor of Liverpool, had captured a rich prize. The change of name from the Catholic Institute to St Edward's College was not.

St Domingo Road in Everton was the intended site for the building of the Metropolitan Cathedral, but this was abandoned owing to financial constraints. The cathedral was eventually located in the city centre near to the southern edge of Everton. [4]

The club was called St. Domingo's because they were named after the St Domingo's Methodist Church where Reverend Ben Swift Chambers created a football team for the winter. But why was the church called "St. Domingo's"?

The Congregational church in Everton Crescent is the result of a separation from the Establishment in 1800; Bethesda Chapel in Hotham Street.

St. Domingo related addresses in Everton all have their their origins in St. Domingo House. In 1877 Rev. Ben Swift Chambers was appointed Minister of St. Domingo Chapel. He created a cricket team for the youngsters in the area but, as cricket was only played in summer, there was room for another sport during winter.

The St Domingo region of Liverpool was named after St Domingo House built in the area by the West Indies trader, privateer and slave trader (ref3 p.26) George Campbell, who became Mayor of Liverpool in 1763. Connections evidencing the slave trade are ubiquitous in Liverpool. The church no longer exists, but acknowledgement is permanently needed.
