Ted Lewis died in his sleep on August 25, 1971 at the age of 81. Following a Jewish funeral service in New York City, his body was brought to Circleville where thousands viewed his coffin. Rabbi Jerome Folkman officiated, telling the congregation: "The song has ended, but the memory lingers on.". Burial took place in the local Forest.
